The Death Penalty Makes Killers Of Us All
Opponents of capital punishment say it has no deterrent effect on crime, wrongly gives governments the power to take human life, and perpetuates social injustices by disproportionately targeting people of color and people who cannot afford good attorneys. Opponents say that lifetime jail sentences are a more severe and less expensive punishment than death.
We need to kill the death penalty, not the people! Out of the 50 states, 19 states have abolished the death penalty for many reasons.
The most obvious problem with capital punishment is the possibility of having the wrong person convicted of a crime. This is a major issue because death is on the line. There needs to be sufficient evidence of a person being guilty before they are sentenced. The lives of those wrongfully accused are changed forever. It makes it harder for them to get jobs in the future, even if they are completely innocent. This is a messed up system.
Secondly, the death process can be extremely painful if done incorrectly. Many inmates will try to survive as long as possible and will hold their breath or fight death in some way. This often prolongs the process and makes the death worse for the inmate and the executioner.
Another interesting point is that the death penalty does not prove a good point. Two wrongs do not make a right. If someone commits a murder and then they are killed, it does not make it all better. The family of the murdered person still does not have them back and the felon is now dead too. The family with the lost loved one will want some kind of revenge on the murderer, but having them sentenced to death will not bring their loved one back. This is not showing a good way to deal with things to the rest of the world, and it takes us back to an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. This is unjust.
The death penalty is meant to deter others from committing the same crimes and having the same fates, but it does not always do its job. If it is not stopping others, the United States should rethink its motives for having capital punishment.
The death penalty leaves no room for rehabilitation. The convict is sentenced to death row and that is it. There are no second chances and they will never get help or live a normal life ever again.
There aren’t really many solutions to the death penalty but there are alternatives such as life in prison, without parole, and with restitution. Restitution means that the criminal must work, and all of the money that he earns will go to the family of the victim. Public support for this alternative is high because they feel that the criminal will never again be a threat to society because the criminal will remain in jail for life. People may also feel that the victim is still being honored, as the criminal will provide another source of income for the victim’s family.
Abolishing the death penalty is one standpoint because: why do we kill people who kill people to show killing people is wrong?
